About the barrows

A place where something significant happens

When you first hear of the barrows, many questions spring to mind. While everything becomes apparent the moment you visit a barrow in person, let us first set the scene.

The barrows

A tucked-away place for everyone

The barrows are handcrafted stone structures covered in earth. They draw influence from our ancient ancestors, using natural stones, such as limestone, and Neolithic architectural techniques, such as corbelling.

They are places of the senses – from the cool touch of the limestone walls and the warmth of the candlelight, to the smells of the seasons and the beauty of the craftsmanship that sits within.

You can use the barrows as not only a place of remembrance but as a place to create memories too. We have children explore the woodland trail, friends hold birthday picnics, families enjoy outdoor theatre, and loved ones just sit, think and accept.

It’s only when you visit the barrows that you understand why it’s a place loved by all.

Niches

A resting place that’s warm, peaceful and positive

A niche is a term we use to describe the alcoves set into the interior walls of the barrows, and that holds a person’s cremated ashes.

They range in size from a single niche to a large niche, holding one set to multiple sets of ashes. They are also available in renewable terms of between 1 to 99 years, allowing you to use your niche as a temporary resting place or as one that passes between generations.

Your niche is your space to interpret as wished. It might hold a simple urn with detailing that comes alive in flickering candlelight or have space for letters and drawings from family members. However you use your niche, it brings you and your family a sense of place after you’ve gone.

Niche covers

An emotive, beautiful and special process

Each niche comes with a stone cover setting it into the walls of the barrow, but this cover can be so much more than a piece of stone etched with dates; it can be a window into the life that sits behind it.

Designing a niche cover is an emotive, beautiful and special process. You and your family work with artists to create a design that’s you. It might be a stained glass window that paints your story, a stone carving that reflects your personality or an intricate painting that retells a cherished memory.

Your niche cover joins a gallery of other storytellers, to create a place of happiness and intrigue for all that visit.
